Working together for tourism

Hoteliers and guest house owners were treated to a day of activities at Lusty Glaze Beach in Newquay recently to forge closer links between local tourism providers.

Around 25 accommodation owners and staff members from Newquay attended the open day at The Adventure Centre to sample the activities available at the beach and explore ways to cross-promote each other’s businesses.

During the day, representatives from hotels and guest houses tackled the Snakes & Ladders vertical assault course, abseiled down cliffs and rode the Zip Wire high across the beach, before enjoying a spot of lunch at Lusty Glaze Restaurant.

Tracey Griffiths, head of centre, said: “There is huge scope for local tourism providers to work together for the benefit of visitors and their own business success.

“We wanted to remind local hoteliers and guest house owners what is available at the beach, so they can recommend us to their guests and vice-versa.”

Establishments of all sizes took up the offer of a free day of adventure, including some large hotels, surf lodges and small guest houses.

Stephen Smith from the Drift Wood Guest House said the day was a huge “adrenaline rush”. He added: “When talking to guests about the local activities, it helps to say you’ve done some of them. You can tell them what it’s going to be like.”

Suzanne Jolly from the Atlantic Hotel commented: “Newquay depends of tourism so it helps the community if we support each other. Word of mouth is vitally important, especially if we can share our experiences.”

As owner of one of the closest guest houses to Lusty Glaze Beach, Fiona Dolan from the Three Tees has long seen the benefits of a close working relationship.

“We did a similar event here three years ago and haven’t stopped raving about it since,” said Fiona. “We have a huge mix of people including couples and families who all ask what there is to do in the local area. As Lusty Glaze is so close, we send most of them here. It’s always good to do the activities ourselves so we can recommend them from personal experience.”
