Top marks for Lusty surfers

A couple of wave-riding instructors from The Adventure Centre at Lusty Glaze Beach in Newquay helped their team to victory at the University of Plymouth Colleges Surf Jam held at Watergate Bay last week (Wed 16 April).

Dom Ferris and Richard Condon, who are also students on the Surf Science & Technology foundation degree based at Lusty Glaze, were members of the winning team representing Cornwall College.

As two of the newest members of the team of instructors at The Adventure Centre, they will be teaching surfing, coasteering, abseiling and other activities at the beach this summer to fit around their studies on the Surf Science course.

Their contribution in last week’s contest caused quite a coup for the Lusty Glaze surfers who were up against many of the region’s best young competitors, including a formidable squad from the University of Plymouth (UoP) itself.

The annual event is a showcase of surfing talent involving entries from teams throughout the UoP Colleges network, including Newquay’s Treviglas Surf Academy and all partner colleges in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and beyond.

Surfers were treated to great conditions at Watergate Bay with clean waves under sunny skies, which helped to bring out the best in all the students.

Lusty’s Surf Science team sliced through the competition with some outstanding individual performances, including an overall win in the Men’s Open for Steven Gale and a title for Carrie Edwards in the Women’s contest. This was backed up with a third place for Grant Strove in the Men’s Open and a third in the Longboard division for Tom Fox.

Open winner Steven Gale commented: “This is the first competition I’ve won so I was really happy with the result. The conditions were good so I just gave it my best shot. I was aiming for a place in the top four so a win is fantastic.”

Beatrice Murawski, Pierre Tallon-Queraud, Mathias Piskernik and Christian Jacobsen also competed and did well in their heats to support the team effort.

Tracey Griffiths, Head of The Adventure Centre, commented: “We’re immensely proud our instructors Dom and Richard, and the whole Surf Science team, who are a credit to the beach and underline the wealth of surfing talent we have here at Lusty Glaze.”
