A Cornish company is helping to keep some of the biggest events in the South West safe this summer thanks to its expertise in health and safety, medical cover and event management.

A team from Newquay based company The Training Centre has been employed as safety consultants to oversee some of the best known events in Cornwall and beyond.

Prestigious festivals such as Rip Curl Unleashed, Surfstock and Falmouth Week will all benefit from The Training Centre’s wealth of safety knowledge and experience.

The company is also helping to bring international mega star Jack Johnson to Cornwall for two shows at Watergate Bay in July.

The Training Centre manager Jeremy Griffiths explained: “Because of our background in health and safety and paramedic care, we’re often called upon to become an integral part of the management team for major music and sporting events.”

While most of the events The Training Centre is working on this year are big music festivals, its team includes lifeguards, coastguards and water rescue professionals so it is also employed to cover many coastal events such as Zap Cat racing and surf contests.

At many of this summer’s events a representative from The Training Centre will be designated as the Safety Officer responsible for risk assessments, health & safety policy, emergency action plans and traffic management.

This Safety Officer also oversees every aspect of an event from design and build through to helping people leave the site safely when it ends.

Mr Griffiths continued: “It’s our job to liaise with the emergency services and licensing authorities to help get the go ahead for these events. We have to look at every eventuality and make sure we have a plan of action for any given situation.

“We are ultimately responsible for the safety of everyone who attends an event. This is a huge undertaking which takes many weeks of hard work and preparation to get right.

“Having been at the forefront of event management in the South West for over ten years, we can deliver the high level of expertise and professionalism required for the safe running of some of the region’s major events.”
